YVOTE + MOTIVOTE CHALLENGE
YVote and motivote are teaming up to empower you, as first-time voters, to turn your intentions and excitement about voting into a reality. We make the process fun, competitive, and social—with the chance to win cool rewards along the way.
If you don’t want or have need to know much more about the challenge, that’s A-OK. You can cut to the chase and just sign up for a voting team here. The short version: create a team, invite a few friends, commit to vote, and get prizes as you get ready and informed along the way,
But if you’ve got a few minutes, we’d love to tell you more about the whys, hows, and whats of our campaign and how we can change the political calculus in our country through it. ✊🏿✊🏼✊🏽
There’s a lot of momentum right now, from students getting registered across New York City to March for Our Lives organizers speaking up against gun violence across the country. And we have an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the midterm elections—affecting issues we’re passionate about, like racial justice, gun violence, affordable housing/gentrification, school desegregation and mass incarceration. But only if we actually show up to vote.
We know life gets busy. When the election comes, you might be just a few months into college, or really busy at school or a new job. Maybe you’ll be living in a different city. And some aspects of voting, or the issues that you’re voting on, might feel confusing.
We’re here to help. We’re giving you the tools to make sure that you and your friends keep up that momentum and make sure you vote this November.
What is the YVote+motivote challenge? When you join the challenge, you are making a collective commitment with a group of friends to vote on November 6, 2018. You win by following through with voting—and by competing against other teams to get informed and engaged. We walk you through everything you need to do and know, make sure you stay on track, and make it fun and rewarding.
Is it a lot of work? No! We want civic engagement to be as easy as possible, so that it fits into your life. The things you must do to win the challenge? Register to vote and then actually vote. Beyond that, we offer a “menu” of different actions that you can take to get informed and support others. You can do as much or as little as you want to earn points that translate into prizes.
Walk me through it:
Sign up to form a Voting Team. We have a quick online form that takes less than 10 minutes on a computer. Click here to reach out. If you want to sign up over text message, that’s fine too. Just text us at ____.
Once you have a Team, it’s time to invite your friends. You can either send them a link so they can sign up. OR you can text us their names & phone numbers and we’ll reach out to them.
From now through the midterms, we send you reminders to keep you on track and cue up Actions to take. Actions are small tasks that get you ready to vote and informed as a citizen. Examples include registering a friend to vote, attending a town hall, or researching an important issue.
Once you complete the Action, you earn points. The bigger the Action, the higher the points. For example, since it takes more effort to volunteer in-person for a campaign event than to send a tweet, you get more points for volunteering. Every point represents a chance to earn a reward.
Rewards? Tell me more!
We want to celebrate you and your friends as you work hard to become informed, engaged citizens.
You can think of the points like raffle tickets. All players are automatically entered into a weekly drawing.
Every two weeks we hold a BIG drawing and a SMALL drawing:
For the BIG drawing, you need at least 20 points to enter. Each point represents a chance to win a bigger prize. (Think: movie pass, restaurant gift card)
For the SMALL drawing, you need at least 5 points to enter. Each point is another chance to win a smaller prize. (Think: discount code, snacks)
Every month, we also celebrate the TEAM with the:
Largest number of members
Highest number of points overall
And, after Election Day, we hold a GRAND PRIZE drawing for a larger reward (think: college scholarship, concert tickets.)
Why should I do this? It’s a win-win situation. You get the chance to win prizes and compete with friends while also making sure that you don’t get frustrated with the process or forget any steps. Creating a voting team is also a great way to demonstrate leadership, by mobilizing your peers and helping them follow through.
What happens if I don’t vote? Your team is only eligible for our GRAND PRIZE drawing, after the election, if everyone submits a Voting Verification form (with a voting selfie). You are not penalized for not voting, but we encourage you not to let your team down or miss this opportunity to make your voice heard. Plus, after you’ve spent the summer and fall engaging in issues, you’ll be extra ready to follow through.
I won’t be 18 on November 6, 2018. Can I still participate? Yes! Those who are ineligible to vote can join teams to support their friends. You will still complete Actions that get you informed about the important issues and voting process, so you’ll be ready to cast your ballot as soon as your birthday arrives. You can also make a huge difference by mobilizing others to register and commit to voting.
Awesome! How do I start? The first thing you do is sign up for a voting team. Then you invite a few friends. We’ll walk you through that once you sign up!
